Short visit

Christina and Rosita came over for a visit. Rosita had her wound checked at Paz Holandesa. It is healing well, slight infection. She will definately need an operation next year to close the gap inside her mouth and at 14 she will need another surgery to correct her nose. She did not gain any weight but has grown and all her teeth came through. She will need to come back at the end of the year for another control.

Rosita is back home

After  a long stay Rosita and her mum Christina have returned to Juliaca. Rosita weighed already 7 kilos and was growing fast. On the 30th of this month she will return for a visist to Paz Holandesa to see if everything is fine. We keep in regular touch and are providing milk and vitamins to Rosita in Juliaca. She will need this untill she is 2 years old. The story of Rosita was written about in the newspaper Diario El Pueblo of the 12th of November. She had a picture of the front page and half a page on page 4. http://www.pazholandesa.com/?p=1338

Rosita

Rosita is finished with the first operation. Stitches were taken out today and everything is fine. No appointment until 30th of November. She needs special food and attention but for the rest she is fine. Her mother wants to return to Juliaca for 3 weeks and return for the 30th. No clue how she is going to find work while caring for her daughter. She was thinking of going back to the mine and I have told her in no uncertain words that working at La Rinconada would probably kill Rosita. We are talking about going to stay at 5400meters in one of the most coldest and polluted areas of the world. Hopefully she will listen.
Rosita will probably have her next operation when she is between 2 and 3 years. Then they will close the palate.

Rosita in hospital

Rosita

Rosita was operated on October 28th and is recovering without problems. We were all nervous due to her previous heart operation, but everything went fine. The last weeks she has put on weight and started growing. She will be in need of special food for some time but there is strong indication that within a year she will a completely healthy child. Her father came to visit for the day of the operation but had to return home quickly. Rosita will need to stay another month in Arequipa for aftercare. All this is provided for free by Paz Holandesa! She will also receive dental care and speech therapy for free until adulthood. And not only Rosita, hundreds of children from poor families receive this.

Rosita

Good news. The hip displacement is not bad and might be corrected easily. This has to be confirmed by another doctor. On Monday we will visit Paz Holandesa in the morning for a evaluation. If she passes she will be scheduled for an operation in the first group at the end of October.

Rosita

I arranged for a seperate health check for Rosita. Good and bad news. According to a cardiologist her heart is good, should be no problems for the next operation which might already be end of October. But the X-ray of her lower body shows that there is probably a hip displacement. Poor Rosita!! So now we need to see a trauma specialist to check this out. If the specialist agrees with it then she might need to be in a corset for months. We have also seen a nutrition specialist and she gave many tips on how Rosita can gain weight. She is now 9 months old and weighs 5 kilo 800.

Rosita

Rosita has recovered form the heart surgery. Crying a lot less and gaining weight. Friday we will visit Paz Holandesa for a check. She is sleeping a lot better, but still loosing her hair. That is normal after a high fever or operation. She has to stay in Arequipa till the next operation, which is planned in the beginning of November. Then they will do the first surgery which will close her lip. Her father is now looking for somebody to take care of their house so he can move here and spent more time with his daugther.

Rosita

Rosita left the hospital October 6th. Hospital did not want to give an appointment to take out her stitches !, so Paz Holandesa will do that today. She is doing a lot better but we have to wait the report from CardioStart to see how succesfull the operation was. According to Christina, the doctors told her she has one more little hole in the heart and maybe that will close itself with time. If not, it means another operation.

It is painfull to see when Rosita eats how much trouble she has keeping the food inside. It is really urgent to close her lip so she can eat better. American doctors before they left told Christina to buy special milk and not Nan. We were able to buy that brand and Christina is very happy because she wants to do exactly as the American doctors tell her. The Peruvian doctors told her she could travel direct to Juliaca but thankfully she listened to us and is now staying with us in Arequipa for some longer. The change of climate is big and would harm the heath of Rosita.
