Rosita out of hospital

Rosita had only to stay in hospital for a couple of days. She is back with us for another month. On Friday they will take the stitches out.

Spanish Cafe Arequipa is a language school that operates in the bungalow and garden. There are many courses to choose from or you can opt for just a 2 hour lesson to practice your Spanish.

Story of Rosita

Rosita was born in January 2010 with a cleft lip and palate. Her parents come from Putina, a small village 7 hrs away from Arequipa. Because of her cleft lip she could not take milk properly and stayed very small. Her parents travelled to Arequipa to look for help. The organisation Paz Holandesa does free operations on amongst others cleft lip and palate, but they discovered that she also had a heart problem. Paz Holandesa contacted CardioStart, an american organisation who organise heart operations in Arequipa. Rosita in the meanwhile was in hospital with pneumonia and lost a lot of weight causing concern whether she was strong enough for the heart surgery. On the 28th of September she had the heart surgery and she is now in intensive care recovering. But she will still need more operations for her lip and she needs a lot of care. The most important item she needs is plain formula milk, but her parents cannot afford this. A big can of Nan formula milk cost 70 soles while here parent are farmers who live off the land and have two more kids to feed. Minimum wage in Peru is after taxes 480 soles!

La Casa de los Pinguinos has kind of adopted Rosita and will organise buying milk and medication for Rosita for as long as it is needed. There is a collection tin in the reception for donations.
